The campus sits on a 300-acre tract of land on the Ashley River, located northwest of downtown Charleston. At the time, the Citadel had the highest percentage of any American college student population serving in the military. In 1865, the Citadel Academy was occupied by Union troops and didn’t reopen as an educational institution until 1882. Since its establishment in 1842, engineering has been a part of the Citadel's instructional program, and in the nation, it stands as the 5th oldest engineering program. News & World Report’s 2019 rankings granted The Citadel the highest among master’s degree offering public institutions in the “Regional Universities-South” category.
